What Not To Do - The Ways to Drive Success Away From Yourself

Author: Everte Farnell

Now on to the tip of the day. Last night watched The Apprentice season finale. I have a few shows each week that I like. As a rule I hate 'reality shows' but I do like The Apprentice.

Well it was down to only two people, Randall and Rebbecca. After hiring Randall, Donald Trump asked Randall a amazing question. Donald asked if Randall thought that he should hire Rebbecca also. What an unexpected question!

They wanted to work on different projects, so it would not have cost Randal a thing. He could have opened the door for a friend (at least a friendly acquaintance). He had won. No one could deny him that. He really had a chance to help someone with no ill effect to him, and secure a life long ally in Rebbecca. (For those of you who do not watch the show, Rebbecca proved to be very loyal even when it almost got her kicked off the show.)

So with all of this sitting in his lap and the chance to really do a good turn, and secure a life long business ally, Randal let vanity get the best of him. He said, there should only be one apprentice.

Loyalty is obtained through giving loyalty. Wealth through giving wealth. By showing a bit of loyalty and helping someone achieve a dream, Randal could have shown Mr. Trump that he was someone to be trusted. He would not turn on his friends/business acquaintances. He could have shown traits that would suggest to Mr. Trump that he is not only brilliant and well educated (and he is) but that he understands that he is not the focus of the business.

Remember that, you are not the focus to the other person, they are. You have to give the rings, which means you need to be generous in your dealings with others. Help others when you can, especially if it doesn't cost you anything.

Someone told me one time that if someone needs something and it means nothing to you, then you should give it to them. I agree.

If you can help someone advance, or bring them with you as you advance, then do it. Assuming, of course, they deserve the position.

So remember, give the rings, as the Barbarian chieftains of old would do. You can't help everyone, and you have to help yourself first, but after that don't be stingy with your time, influence or money. It will all come back several times.

With that I will say:

Get the Barbarian Mind Set and keep it. Stay tr to yourself and your family, the rest will take care of itself.
